Maison Perrier-Jouët unveils Ode à La Nature – Édition Volutes

The second collaboration with Haute Couture embroiderer
Atelier Montex to adorn its Belle Époque vintage champagnes.

For over two centuries, Maison Perrier-Jouët has been admired not only for the excellence of its champagnes, but also for its passion for art and nature – endless sources of inspiration since the House’s founding. Today, art, nature and champagne are celebrated in the Perrier-Jouët Objets Extraordinaires Collection, a series of exceptional objects crafted from the finest materials by the most skilful artisans in a dazzling display of savoir-faire that complements the House’s rare and precious Belle Époque vintage cuvées.

Following last year’s Ode à La Nature – Edition Libellule, Maison PerrierJouët is delighted to present this year’s Ode à La Nature – Edition Volutes. This unique design, which embraces a jeroboam of Perrier-Jouët Belle Epoque champagne in graceful swirls – volutes in French – features delicately embroidered flowers and leaves. Once again, this enchanting work of art is the result of a collaboration with the prestigious Haute Couture embroiderer Atelier Montex. Founded in Paris in 1939, Atelier Montex has developed a reputation for combining traditional artisanal techniques with precious materials and innovative technology. Part of Chanel’s Métiers d’Art constellation since 2011, it is among the residents at Le 19M in Paris, which houses all of Chanel’s specialist couture artisans.

A swirling passion for art and nature

Founded in 1811 by Pierre-Nicolas Perrier and Rose-Adélaïde Jouët, Maison Perrier-Jouët perpetuates the spirit of its founders, a couple united by their love of art and nature, as well as their vision of champagne. Free-spirited and independent-minded, they chose the Chardonnay grape – little used at the time, and notoriously difficult to cultivate – as their signature, initiating the elegant, floral style which instantly set Perrier-Jouët champagnes apart.

In 1902, this floral signature inspired Emile Gallé, one of the pioneers of the Art Nouveau movement, to design the Japanese anemone motif which would become the iconic emblem of the House, adorning every bottle of Perrier-Jouët Belle Epoque champagne. In turn, Atelier Montex drew inspiration from Maison Perrier-Jouët’s heritage, and in particular, the natural motifs and graceful lines typical of Art Nouveau, to create Ode à la Nature – Edition Volutes.

A masterpiece of grace and savoir-faire

With its swirling flowers and leaves, Ode à la Nature – Edition Volutes is indeed an ode to nature and it is also an ode to savoir-faire. A masterpiece of grace and delicacy, its intricately embroidered blossoms appear to swirl around the champagne bottle. Hand-crafted by a cabinetmaker in a painstaking process taking 20 hours, its structure is formed of interlocking swirls of walnut and mirror-finish brass. The brass swirls, plated with 24-carat gold, take a jeweller seven hours to create. Then, the embroidered motifs are delicately attached to this intricate structure. Using 8,000 beads and sequins in 30 shades of pink, white, gold and green, the flowers and leaves are embroidered on silk organza – shimmering with life through the subtle nuances of colour, shape and texture. Seventy crystal-set stones add further brilliance and refinement, while the centres of certain flowers are ornamented with white glass beads. Employing the materials and techniques of Haute Couture, including Lunéville and needle embroidery, a single piece takes 160 hours to complete.

Three exceptional vintages from the Oenothèque Perrier-Jouët

To accompany Ode à la Nature – Edition Volutes, Cellar Master Séverine Frerson has selected from the Oenothèque Perrier-Jouët – the House’s reserve of rare vintages – three outstanding expressions of the iconic Perrier-Jouët Belle Epoque cuvée in a majestic jeroboam format. “Perrier-Jouët Belle Epoque is a true icon – a rare and elegant champagne that celebrates the art of blending in the Perrier-Jouët style,” she explains, “and for this edition, we have chosen three vintages that demonstrate this style across time.”

Each vintage is drawn from a different decade, representing a unique opportunity to appreciate the unrivalled savoir-faire of Maison Perrier-Jouët, and also the remarkable continuity of its elegant, floral style. The Édition Volutes explores the Perrier-Jouët Belle Époque cuvée in jeroboam size in a journey spanning three decades. The experience begins with Perrier-Jouët Belle Époque 2012, a harmonious champagne blending floral aromas of acacia and magnolia with notes of candied lemon, dried fruit, acacia honey and sweet tobacco. The journey continues with Perrier-Jouët Belle Époque 2008, an exceptionally fine wine with aromas of orange blossom and white peach, and delicate notes of white and dried flowers on the palate which build towards a lingering finish. The collection concludes with Perrier Jouët Belle Époque 1999, an expressive cuvée with intense notes of fragrant peony and red rose on the nose, and fresh, almost airy notes on the palate.

A shared vision of luxury, excellence and savoir-faire

The collaboration between Maison Perrier-Jouët and Atelier Montex is an ongoing dialogue between two French houses. Not only do they share a vision of luxury and excellence, but also a passion for artisanal savoir-faire elevated to the point of absolute perfection. A unique encounter between the art of champagne and the art of embroidery, Ode à la Nature – Edition Volutes incarnates Maison Perrier-Jouët’s ultra-luxury vision, with a limited, numbered edition of just ten pieces available to collectors of objets d’art and exceptional wines.

“Each Perrier-Jouët Belle Epoque vintage is one of a kind, the fruit of nature and savoir-faire,” says Séverine Frerson. “In collaborating with Atelier Montex, I see the similarities between the intricate art of embroidery and the process of blending champagne. Both take time and precision to create a rare treasure.”

Aska Yamashita, artistic director of Atelier Montex, adds, “This ongoing collaboration is very exciting, allowing us to celebrate nature in different ways: through Perrier-Jouët’s rare vintage champagnes as well as our bespoke impressions of natural motifs. Reinterpreting Art Nouveau designs in precious materials was an exciting creative endeavour.”
